Memories of Summer '98
Here are just a few of the team's many memories captured on film this past summer.

3rd Montreal Dragon Boat Festival - July 25-26th

    1998 Montreal Dragon Boat Festival
  • Souvenir from Ottawa
Before the races begin, Franklin is surprised with a souvenir from the team's trip to the Dragonboat Races in Ottawa. The same paddle that he used that broke at the beginning of one of the races.. signed by the other members of that team. See "Ta-daah!" below
  • Focus
In the final minutes before the first race of the festival, you could almost feel the tension and excitement in the air.
  • Marked
Showing off the temporary tattoos are Karen, Joan, Andrew, Abbas & Andrew.
  • Armed and Dangerous
    Don't mess with these guys!
  • The Titanic
Funniest thing.. there was a tiny sticker at the front of the boat that said "Titanic" on it. I took a photo but it didn't turn out.
  • The Titanic - Part 2
Yet another shot of the unsinkable Titanic.
  • Intensity
Joan wants to win this race.
  • Photo in the Newsapaper
For the 2nd year in a row, our team was mentioned in The Gazette. Last year, it was an article. This year it was a photo. On the drum is Susanna. Following in the first row are Doris & Howard. Also visible are Kelly & Gordon.

  • Keepin' Cool
Gary's son Cody, armed with a bottle of water, sneaks up on Jason. For some reason, Jason seems to be everyone's target. Dunno why.. heh heh..
  • The Other Team
Joan with some friends from the Poon Kai Dragon Boat Team. From left to right are Winston, Stan & Nathan. That's Joan in the red.
  • Final Race
After accidentally drifting out of our lane, we followed proper protocol & came to a full stop. Even though we knew we were disqualified, we weren't one to sit back & accept it without a fight. Sitting 6th after restarting from a full stop, while everyone else continued on, we fought back to end the race 3rd out of the 6 teams.
  • Silver Medals!
After getting the Silver Medal in the Local Mixed Finals.. Johnny's face pretty much says it all.
  • Waiting for the Medals
Sitting around waiting for the medals to be given out. The announcer jokingly declared when some 45 members of our two teams went up for the medals, "Wow, they can actually fit so many people into one boat?" While we competed as two teams, we all regarded ourselves as one BIG team.
  • RCMP Cup
Receiving the RCMP Cup & Silver Medals for coming in 2nd.. we celebrated with one final "Wong, Wong, Wong!" cheer.
  • Making a Splash!
Poor Gary was caught unawares by the celebratory dumping of the water cooler.
  • Team Picture
After Gary had dried off from the previous picture above.. we gathered for one final group photo with our team mascot at the right.
  • Medals & the RCMP Cup
    Here they are...

    1998 WWSA Dragonboat Team

BBQ at our Fearless Leader's House - July 19th

Gary, the man most responsible for gathering all of us together, threw a pre-race BBQ at his place for everyone.
  • Gift from the team
Gary is presented with an engraved mug as a token of thanks from the team that raced in Ottawa.
  • Gotcha
Jason is the unfortunate but for some reason.. frequent.. target of the Super Soaker.   heh heh..
  • Yer late..
Howard found out what the penalty for showing up late was when Ray ambushed him with the Soaker. That's Franklin on the right getting a good laugh out of it.
  • Hangin' out..
Jody, Andrew, Diahann & Sammy hangin' out at the BBQ after the food was all gone.
  • What's good for the goose..
Andrew.. holding the Super-Soaker.. gets a well-earned soaking with the garden hose by Bill after spraying everyone else with the Super Soaker.

1998 National Capital Dragon Boat Race Festival - July 4-5th

  • 100 Metre Race
The 100 Metre Sprint. A quick but highly exciting race to watch. I wish that they had it here in Montreal.
  • Our cheering section..
Jessica, Taylor & Chelsea.. always present at the practices and at all the races to cheer the team on.
  • Ta-Daah!
One broken paddle early on in the race makes a big difference on the results. Oh well.. them's the breaks.. literally.
  • Bird's Eye View
Sitting in a rented paddleboat right at the finish line, Abbas, Andrew & Andy get front row seats for the race. Too funny..
  • Recharging the batteries..
With 4 races to race that day.. nothing gets one ready for the next race quite like a good power nap.. as Johnny is doing.
  • Show me the Medal!
The team received medals for having the fastest time in the Professional Challenge.
  • Girl Power!
This photo is pretty much self-descriptive.
  • Wongs
The creative genius behind this website and his sister Joan.
