Memories of Summer '99

WWSA Dragonboat Team BBQ - June 13th, 1999

On a hot summer day, the team gathered at Park Cap St. Jacques near Lac Deux-Montagnes for a Bar-B-Q. It was a time for team members, old and new, to get aquainted with each other. It was also a desire to, at the same time, have fun & get some much needed rest and relaxation.

  • Volleyball Diehard volleyball players.. venturing out into the sweltering heat to play.
  • The secret revealed Now we find out why the super soaker sprayed such cold water as Cyn gets some ice water from the cooler.
  • Unfair Gee.. I dunno. Is this a fair fight? Hmm..

    1999 National Capital Dragon Boat Festival - June 26-27th

  • High Five Celebratory high-five's after winning the first race of the morning by almost 2 boat lengths.
  • Yawn.. Franklin get's some shuteye before the next race.
  • Wong.. Wong.. Wong..!! Ah yes.. the ol' familiar pre-race cheer to get everyone pumped up! Can you recognize who's who?
  • The exciting 100 metre race
  • Professional Services Challenge We had to win this race if we were to keep possession of the Professional Services Challenge Cup that we won last year. We're ahead by half a boat with less than 10 metres from the finish line.

    Montreal Dragon Boat Festival Media Demonstration - July 14th

    For the 3rd year in a row, the Wong Wun Sun Dragonboat Team makes it into the media. This year, we showed up in a photo on page A3 of the July 15th issue of the French newspaper, Le Devoir.

    With the 4th Annual Montreal Dragon Boat Festival a week away, in preparation for the 1999 races, organizers held a demonstration race for the media & other local dignitaries. Our team was one of a handful of local teams invited to participate in the race. Aside from this photo in Le Devoir, the team was also shown prominently in a 7-second clip & later that evening in a 30-second festival preview on the July 14th CBC Evening News.

    On July 21st, the DragonHearts & members of it's crew were filmed by a cameraman from the French Television Quatre-Saison TV Station during their final practice before the races. It was to be aired on the weekend after the first day's races. However, everyone was too tired to stay up to watch the late news to see if we were on or not. They interviewed DragonHeart'er Ron Denault for about 5 minutes. I guess some of that must have made it.

    1999 National Convention of The Wongs' Association of Canada - September 3-6th, 1999

    Wong Convention Logo Labour Day weekend, many members of the 1997-1999 Wong Wun Sun Association Dragonboat team and/or the Montreal Wong Wun Sun Association were found doing volunteering and various other duties at the 4-day 1999 National Convention of The Wongs' Association of Canada that is being held this year in Montreal.
