Victoria Day - May 20, 2002
A record number of participants (both experienced and new paddlers) coupled with few "friendly"
challenges heard over the basin waters made for a great afternoon of paddling. The only damper
was a bit of rain and wind for the Wong-A-Be's races. What great weather to introduce those
friends & family members to the sport that we love, eh? They impressed everyone by giving
their all under hard weather in two heart-stopping races.
The Wong Regatta would not have been possible without Milton, who every year is the driving
force behind the event; special thanks to Lily, Toula, Dave, the race captains, all the volunteers
for the grill, set-up/clean-up and wong-a-bees races; thanks also to the coaches Matt Roberts and
Matt Smith who showed the new paddlers the ropes. Last but not least, a big thanks to all who
showed up despite the changing weather: Wongs, Power of the Dragons, Elite and Eye Catch Women
Crew, friends and family. Goldie, your kindness of spirit and generosity have truly been appreciated.
All the hard work and the hard paddling by all who came out made this a fun afternoon of "friendly"
racing.
Here are a few memories from the regatta.. more coming once everyone starts to develop their rolls
of film.

Wong-A-Be for those wannabe-a-Wong for a day. In our annual tradition, we introduce family and
friends to the sport. |
| It was a bit wet but fun was had by all Wong-A-Be Paddlers. Not bad for the first time in a
dragonboat. |
|
|
There were lots of hamburgers, hot dogs & sausages for everyone. |
| Men's Race - Teams representing both teams. The teams were quite even. It came down to which boat
took the final stroke that propelled them across the finish line.

|
The All-Women's Boat heads out to the start line for the Men vs. Women - Battle of the Sexes Race... pitting 16 Women vs 10 Men. |
| Before they go out, Milton tries to get the steering oar back. |

Gary gives it a try. |

Little did the winning men's team realize what the women had in store for them as they posed for
a group photo. As they sat there, the women were quietly bringing out the water balloons.
|
| "Invited" for a swim by some of the guys, France does everything she can to stay out of the
cold water even if it means stretching Jon's shirt to twice it's normal size. |
