History
Formerly known as the Wong Wun Sun Association Dragonboat Team,
the Wong's Dragon Boat Club
has been in existence since 1997. First comprised of members of
the Wong Wun Sun Association and their friends and family, the
Wong Dragon Boat Club has now expanded to approximately 100 keen
members paddling in four different crews.
Following the humble successes of our first year, we expanded and
created a second team, then known as the Dragonhearts (1998), and
in late 2000, an all-men’s team the Rage, was put together as a
testosterone challenge against the infamous Days Inn team. In 2004,
a womens’ team, the Amazons was formed and enjoyed a successful season.
Today
The Wong’s Dragon Boat Club, located in Montreal, currently consists of
four mixed crews, ranging from the premier Dragonslayers and highly
competitive Immortal Dragons to the recreational mixed Chargers and
Crusaders crews.
We are proud of our Club Development System, which caters to paddlers
commitment, fitness, needs, and abilities and offers opportunities for growth.
Team goals
The club's mission statement is: "To promote and develop interest in the
sport of dragon boat racing to the best of our ability through team work,
honour, respect, commitment, enthusiasm and fun."
We want to ultimately develop paddlers to represent the Wong’s Dragon Boat
Club at the highest levels of dragon boat racing and offer opportunity for
growth through defined systematic programs.
Team philosophy
We believe in a fun, family atmosphere where team members enthusiastically
support one another, helping each other improve while paddling and training
together. All are encouraged to strive to improve as paddlers and achieve
higher goals through the Club system. Team members also bond through numerous
well-attended social activities held throughout the year, giving 110% of
themselves all the while having fun.
Where and how we practice
Our current paddling location is the Lachine Canal, where we train two to
three times a week from late April to late September. Winter paddling (one
to three times a week) takes place in the paddling pool of the Olympic basin
on Ile Notre Dame from early November to late April.
Our paddlers, under the guidance of 22 Dragon coaching staff, invest many hours
of focused and dedicated training both on and off the water. Paddling,
strength-training and fitness programs are implemented by many of our crews
training year-round.
Team results and Accomplishments
In a global sense, the best achievement that we can state is our consistency.
Our dragon boat club has been together since 1997, and that with each successive
year we have improve upon the previous year without compromising our team philosophy.
We are extremely proud of the impressive progress and accomplishments from each
of our crews over the years. Full details are available on the “race results”
page of our website.
