Revealing the Secrets of Cyprus

If you are planning a holiday on Cyprus, you will want to cram as much as you possibly can into your stay.  As it is the third largest island in the Mediterranean, you really should consider what form of transport you will need to see as much as possible of the island.  There are buses, of course, but car hire in Cyprus could not be easier these days; and it certainly offers the most comfortable form of travel around this wonderful island.

Let’s assume you have arranged to visit the island’s beautiful, ancient capital, Nicosia.  You can spend a day wandering in and out of the streets and squares of the old town, looking at the Venetian walls, visiting the museums, cathedral and Byzantine churches, but then what?   You will almost certainly want to venture further afield to see the royal tombs and the famous monastery at Tamassos, not to mention the mosque at Peristerona and the amazing church in the cliff face at Deftera.

If you want to set your own agenda, you really need your own transport.  Opting for car hire in Cyprus will enable you to organise your own excursions all over the island.  There is a good road from Nicosia to Larnaca where, in winter, you can see the great colourful flock of flamingos gathering on the edge of the famous salt lake, or the beautiful old mosque standing in tranquil majesty in its lovely gardens.

Alternatively, you may want to venture into the hills to find the village of Lefkara, to purchase some of exquisite hand-made lace for which it is famous and take in the serenity of the convent of St Minas or the mediaeval Chapelle Royal  near Pyrga.

You can travel on to Limassol, once again by a good road to give you a smooth and easy journey and in no time at all you can be standing in the grounds of the castle overlooking the old harbour and truly believing you have travelled back in time.  Limassol’s museums are a paradise for culture lovers, whilst the municipal gardens and zoo will offer delights for the younger tourists.

With car hire in Cyprus you can then go on to Pafos, a beautiful town, steeped in cultural history.  Pafos is rich in ancient sites and myths and legends arising from them.  An absolute must visit is the Villa of Theseus with its truly amazing mosaic depicting the hero slaying the dreadful Minotaur.

This is a mere whistle-stop tour of places to see on this wonderful island.  When you hire your own transport on Cyprus you will be able to explore these and myriads more treasures of this beautiful island at your own pace and in your own time; making your visit to Cyprus truly unforgettable.
